This summer I began some new work related to my alphabet paintings and including personal hieroglyphics. The writing and the drawing are Automatic. The rest of the year I have been painting from poetry, prose, and stock quotes, using existing texts of Homer, Gertrude Stein, Walt Whitman, and the Wall St. Journal. I continue to be interested in the form and feel of language, the shape, line, color, and layering of letters and numbers. The words are not readable but they form the basis for
the paintings.
Sometimes I feel like a scribe, chronicling the myriad messages that travel through space in the form of books, newspapers, talk, text messaging, Facebook, advertising, T.V.,and dreams, a dense thicket of information.
The flag series came about because my diptychs and triptychs seemed to coalesce out of the confusion and stand for something, even if only for states of feeling and circumstance. The flags signify ownership and territory of those states of feeling and mind.
